Gayle powers Windies to 7-wicket win

chris-gayleDuring their seven-wicket victory over Australia on Saturday, West Indies reached their 100 in just eight overs – the fastest team hundred on record in T20 internationals. Australia held the previous record as they took 8.2 overs to reach the three-figure mark against England at Sydney in 2006-07.

The victory also means that the West Indies have now won both their T20 internationals against Australia. They had also beaten Australia at Bridgetown in 2008 (by 3 wickets). Also, it was Australia's fourth consecutive defeat in T20 internationals.

Chris Gayle smashed a number of records during his knock of 88. He became first batsman to hit six or more sixes in a match on two occasions. Gayle had hit a world record 10 sixes against South Africa at Johannesburg in 2007-08.

Gayle has now taken his tally of sixes to 22 in just eight innings, moving ahead of India's Yuvraj Singh and New Zealand's Ross Taylor. Now only New Zealand's Brendon McCullum (23) is ahead of Gayle.

Gayle's 23-ball fifty is the fastest by a West Indian in T20 Internationals, bettering Marlon Samuels' 25-ball fifty against England at the Oval in 2007. His fifty is also the second fastest by any batsman against Australia, after Yuvraj Singh's 20-ball fifty for India at Durban in 2007-08.

Gayle won his third Man of the Match award, which puts him at level with Pakistan's Shahid Afridi. Only Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya is ahead of Gayle with five awards.

Gayle's 88 is the second highest individual innings against Australia after Graeme Smith's unbeaten 89 for South Africa at Johannesburg in 2005-06.

Gayle (88) and Andre Fletcher (53) provided the fourth instance of both openers scoring a fifty in the same innings.

The first wicket partnership of 133 runs between Gayle and Fletcher was the highest partnership for any wicket against Australia. The previous best was an unbroken 119-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Pakistan's Shoaib Malik and Misbah-ul-Haq at Johannesburg in 2007-08. Incidentally, the previous highest opening stand against Australia was 53 between West Indies' Xavier Marshall and William Perkins at Bridgetown in 2008.

West Indies' 172 for 3 is the highest score by a side against Australia batting second, obliterating New Zealand’s 170 at Auckland in 2004-05.

By conceding 56 runs in his four overs, Brett Lee achieved the dubious distinction of recording worst figures by an Australian in T20 internationals. Jason Gillespie had conceded 49 runs against England at Southampton in 2005.
