Australia's selectors have forgiven Michael Clarke for his poor form in Twenty20, naming him to captain Australia against Pakistan in England in July. Clarke will lead the side for the two Twenty20s in Birmingham on July 5 and 6 despite his struggles with the bat in the shortest format, where his strike-rate of 101 is well below par.Clarke was praised for his attacking captaincy at the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, where he guided Australia to the final, but he needs to lift his scoring rate to justify his position as a batsman. He will lead the same squad that visited the West Indies, with Tim Paine the only omission due to the reduced need for a backup wicketkeeper.
Australia will begin their tour with a one-day international against Ireland in Dublin on June 17 followed by five ODIs against England. There were no surprises in the one-day squad, which will be captained by Ricky Ponting, and features the return of Shaun Marsh from an injury lay-off to replace Adam Voges.
The selectors have delayed naming a squad for the two Tests against Pakistan in London and Leeds from mid-July, as they are keen to see the form of several players in an Australia A series before making up their minds. Australia A take on Sri Lanka A in a four-day match in Brisbane starting on June 18 and the squad will be named after that fixture.
The absence of Phillip Hughes due to a shoulder injury means that several batsmen will be jostling for the back-up position in the Test squad. Usman Khawaja, Michael Klinger and the Australia A captain George Bailey are the leading contenders for a place on the England tour.
